Abe Lincoln, depression, and "mental health"
Happened this morning on a great paragraph from Lincoln's Melancholy: how depression challenged a president and fueled his greatness: Can we say that Lincoln was "mentally ill?" Without question, he meets the US Surgeon general's definition of mental illness, since he experienced "alterations in thinking, mood or behavior" that were associated with "distress and/or impaired functioning." Yet Lincoln also meets the surgeon general's criteria for mental health: "the successful performance of mental function, resulting in productive activities, fulfilling relationships with other people, and the ability to adapt to change and cope with adversity." By this standard, few historical figures led such a healthy life. In all my years of putting myself down and thinking that I'm crazy, non-functional, etc. because of depression, I've never allowed myself that perspective. I feel damn good about myself right now. Turns out also that Lincoln's dark moods were often influenced by bad weather - another parallel. By the way, I ended up finding this book randomly in the Watertown Public Library and was immediately intrigued by it. Did I mention that the Watertown Public Library is, as the kids say, Made of Win? Current Mood: inspired |

Drink garnish close-out
Thanks to everyone that posted their idea of the best garnish for a bourbon and coke. To repeat, the default is to not have a garnish at all, and this was an exercise on what fruit, if you had to have one would work the best. Chery and/or Orange were the most popular suggestions, with Starfruit and Durian being the more esoteric ideas. Two people happen upon the ideas that we came up with at the time, being the Bosc Pear and an apple. Though the type of apple is very important, as there is a huge flavor difference between a Granny Smith and a Red Delicious. The variant we came up with at the Happy Hour would be an apple with a more balanced flavor profile, so it would complement rather than skew the taste of the bourbon and coke. I'm thinking either a Mutsu or Jana Gold. I think that, after soaking in the bourbon and coke for a while, the apple will pick up a good flavor, enhancing its original taste. Tetris and other shapes for bookcases
I was going to write a long involved post about how this bookshelf that I loved loved loved turned out to be too short in person and how tragic is that. I did a mondo huge search on the Internet and found only two other things that MIGHT be as cool, these Tetris blocks and this one from Target. The former is terribly geeky and what a fun puzzle to figure out an optimal configuration of 7 tetris pieces in a 7x4 configuration (I was going to let you try it of course). It's also horribly expensive. The latter is cute enough, design-wise - I literally searched the entire Internet for this sort of design - but the price makes me worry about the quality of the materials. Considering it's going to be opposite an imposing desk made of hardwood (maybe walnut), I don't want it to look ridiculously flimsy in comparison. BUT, this morning while lying in bed hungover, it dawned on me that maybe I could go a little taller with my living room bookcases. The original vision was to hang my travel photographs above the bookcase so as to make it a little "gallery". The ceiling is low there, so it couldn't be too high, but I think if I went to a height of 55" for the bookcase, I could still hang framed 5x7s without it looking unduly crowded. I think. As I've just discovered that the first bookcase is only 24", so if I bought two and stacked them... as long as the weight of the books didn't break them and the double line in the middle didn't make it too blocky looking... there's also the issue that the bookcase is made out of "BambooTimbre", which sounds like code for bamboo particle board, so we again have that differing quality in same room problem. What do you think? Current Mood: loose with a tape measure |

Questions: Five Plus One
The dread questions! From the devious mind of babymako, Godfather of the Piccolo Crime Family. Leave me a comment saying "Resistance is Futile." • I'll respond by asking you five questions so I can satisfy my curiosity. • Update your journal with the answers to the questions. • Include this explanation in the post and offer to ask other people questions. 1. How/where did you meet green_kohai? At a TES meeting in 2005, her first. We had actually first encountered each other three months before when I worked in Central Park as a Monitor for The Gates project. 2. Ditto c4bl3fl4m3? In the summer of 2005 at the Crucible when I was vending. Ahhh memories. We've been good friends ever since. 3. Do you consider yourself bi? I don't like wearing that label. And I don't wear it. Don't like "bi-curious" either. "Queer" works better for me with lashings of "sorta straight." But my first answer to the sexual identity question is "kink" or "leather". How about "comfortable?" 4. What's your earliest kinky memory or experience? The thing with the two goats in back of the school...no seriously. I had an active fantasy life all through my teenage years, indulging myself in masturbation, phone sex (drove my poor mother batshit with the bills) and written porn. Discovered "real" kink folk on IRC when I was 19 and I remember a woman who orgasmed on the phone and then told me I wasn't to release for a week. And that release came on my 20th birthday, no pun intended. 5. Finish the sentence: What I want the most is a full-time writing and editing gig with some security. And your extra: What musical instruments do you play? bass guitar, harmonica, and djembe but not all at the same time! Played trombone in junior high. I know more about music than I do about how to play it myself. Current Music: Interesting Meat Loaf documentary |

Humpday poll - Control of the Story Poll #1483848 Who? is the new I would like to complain about this poll
Open to: All, detailed results viewable to: All, participants: 20 To which talk should Kate go? Would you vote for Carly Fiorina for president or vp of the US? Which is more important*? Is the Congressional Budget Office partisan? Is the State Dept partisan? Who does the NY Times (not so) secretly support? *ObNote for the Pedantic: Yes, I know the anti-abortion amendment didn't actually do all that much to change the status of abortion in the US. This is a response to commenters on one or two blogs I read rather than what actually passed. |

The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald Tonight marks the anniversary of the sinking of the S.S. Edmund Fitzgerald on the Great Lakes in 1975. Those of you who know me well know a bizarre running joke of mine--asking the odd street musician, doo-wop ensemble or barbershop quartet (and once a group of Mariachis) to perform the Gordon Lightfoot song detailing the particulars of this famous shipwreck. "The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down Of the big lake they call Gitche Gumee Superior, they say, never gives up her dead When the gales of November come early." Amazingly enough, it was two years ago on the way to Kinky Kollege 2007 that I heard a busking musician sing and play the entire song in the concourse of O'Hare Airport. No, it was NOT a request. After he was done I tipped him $5 and he suggested that from now on I ask for the "City of New Orleans" by Arlo Guthrie. So let's take a moment of silence and ring the bell 29 times, for tonight, the Witch of November came early and 29 good men were drowned on the Edmund Fitzgerald. D and D Soda!!!!
Yes, this a very geeky plug for actual D and D Soda from the Jones Soda Company. I hae recently gotten involved in a campaign here in Brooklyn, at the behest of the fabulous (and even geekier) Emily. I think we need a case of this for the next time we play.... Flavors include: Bigby's Crushing Thirst Destroyer Illithid Brain Juice Sneak Attack Dwarven Draught Potion of Healing. Now, being an old D and D guy and someone who knows his Monster Manual, I gotta go with the Illithid Brain Juice--that's the D and D name for the Mind Flayers. You know: these guys: Here's the soda label: Current Mood: cheerfulCurrent Music: Watching CSI |

For Your Reading Pleasure... Okay, it's official, I'm launching DARON'S GUITAR CHRONICLES. It's a serialized novel that never would have worked as a traditional print novel because it was too long. It's a coming of age story, a coming out story, and a period piece about the 1980s. It's sex, drugs, and rock and roll from the point of view of a neurotic 19-year-old closet case. Daron: Hey! Watch it with the name-calling! Me: What? Did I lie? Daron: Well, no. But I'm not neurotic. Me: Says who? Daron: And I'm not in the closet, because I'm not gay. Me: You just "like guys." Daron: Yeah. Me: Uh-huh. Daron: Don't give me that look. You know it's more complicated than that. Me: If you say so. Daron: Hey readers, don't listen to her. Go see for yourself. You'll totally agree with me once you see what's going on. The first few posts are up for your reading pleasure at: DARON'S GUITAR CHRONICLES. New content will be appearing every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, starting on Monday the 16th. Please spread the word! Follow Daron on Twitter to get a little reminder each time a new post appears ( @daron_moondog). Meanwhile go read what's there to get you started! Comments welcome! |

On the subject of garnishes for alcohol
I have a challenge for my ethanol inclined friends. I was at a Happy Hour last week, and the subject of Garnishes came up. Specifically, what is the appropriate garnish for a Bourbon and Coke. This was inspired by someone coming out with a B&C garnished with a lime wedge. Obviously unsuitable, as the ascorbic acid in the line would cut/water down the earthy aroma and mild spice texture of the bourbon, though it blends with the coke rather well. Now, it's easy to say "Why, nothing!" as it is, after all, a "man's drink" and those don't get garnishes. I believe a number of my conosiours of alcohol will agree with that. However, humor me in this exploration of possibilities. If you were to garnish a Bourbon and Coke with a fruit, what would it be? Why? The why is important, as it is necessary to consider the flavor profile of the fruit as it he drink is consumed, and both how the fruit impacts the drink, but also how the drink impacts the fruit. So, ideally, the fruit's flavor would be enhanced by the drink, and would be edible either half or all the way through the consumption of the beverage. Remember, this is a fruit, not a vegetable or root (someone suggested a hickory stick, another a licorice root, both admirable ideas, but outside the purview of the question). After much deliberation, we came up with a possible answer, which I will reveal in a later post. But, before then, I am curious as to your suggestions. Current Mood: thoughtful |
